Lip Scrubs: What are they and why you need one right now.
What exactly is a lip scrub?
A lip scrub is a beauty product made for removing dead skin cells from your lips. It usually contains an emollient and an exfoliant. An exfoliant such as a granular ingredient like sugar is typically used to help with physically sloughing away dry skin on your lips. A good lip scrub will also have some other moisturizing ingredients (the emollient) such as shea butter or moisturizing oils. This is important to replenish moisture in your lips.
Lip scrubs are becoming more and more popular. In fact, it should be a regular part of your beauty routine, especially in drier weather such as the fall and winter. Dry weather tends to pull moisture away from your skin and your lips tend to suffer the most during these seasons. Yet somehow, we tend to skip lip treatments while tending to other parts of our skin.
How are lips structured?
Your lips have significantly less layers of skin compared to your face (think 3-5 layers on your lips versus up to 16 on your face). This is why your lips are so much more delicate than the rest of your skin. In fact, your lips are one of the top three most sensitive parts of your body. Because there are no extra layers of protection, your lips dry out and get chapped and flaky much quicker than other parts of your face.
Why do I need a lip scrub?
Lips scrubs are needed to both remedy AND prevent dry lips. Lip scrubs are great for keeping your pucker soft and for prepping your lips for color lipsticks too. However, you don't have to wear lipstick to consider a lip scrub treatment. Even if you don't wear color cosmetics, you still want to keep your lips soft, moist and looking great. Dry lips tend to look rough and unpolished so giving yourself a lip scrub treatment can keep them looking their best. Exfoliating your lips also have the benefit of neutralizing discoloration by fading dark spots on the lips.
How often should you exfoliate your lips?
The lips are very delicate and should not be over-exfoliated. In fact, too much exfoliation can actually make your skin much drier than before. Exfoliate your lips once or twice a week for maximum results.
